Popular legend states that the mythical Liver Birds, designed by Carl Bernard Bartels, are protecting the people of Liverpool - one watching over the city and the other bird watching over the sea.Local legend states that the male bird is checking to see if the pubs are open, and the female is looking for handsome sailors heading into port!
It is also said that Liverpool will cease to exist if either bird flew away.
